Class Video Project: Dear Young Artist

Dear Young Artist

Summary/Prompt:
Begin by reading "Letters to a Young Artist" (Peter Nesbett) and take notes on what was meaningful to you. Next, each student will write a letter to a younger self: encouraging yourself in your art practice and beyond. Next, as a class, we will collaboratively pull the most important pieces into a script for our class movie: Dear Young Artist. All storyboarding, b-roll, and studio work will be done collaboratively. Each student will also make a hand animation on printed frames as an optional piece of b-roll. Finally, each student will make their own edit of the material, as a playful experiment in filmmaking. Everyone is at different place with experience, so use this as a chance to improve your own editing skills. Play with effects, pay attention to audio and transitions, and consider tropes and techniques you've seen but never played with before. You can lean into tropes/genres, make it silly, create something that feels cinematic, or go for a 90's inspired Public Service Announcement. Style choices in editing are entirely up to you!
